Leodis finally got the win they deserved from this tough and frustrating encounter against local rivals Red Lion, managed by ex-Leodis player Damian Armitage. On a hot evening it was constant pressure from Leodis from the first minute to the last, which finally paid off with a last gasp winner from Jordan Mudd.
Leodis made a few changes with captain Stephen Jackson injured and Melynczuk switching to right back, with Brown moving to right midfield and Mark Smith returning to centre midfield. Leodis attempted to play it on the deck with short sharp passing and movement off the ball, with Red Lion happy to sit back and clear the ball long and high at every opportunity. The Leodis breakthrough came on 15mins, Scholes won the ball on half-way and played a through ball to Lee Mckenzie, who’s first shot was saved by the goalies legs before scoring from the rebound.
The first-half continued with Leodis pressure, but with some poor finishing and the Red Lion goalie pulling off some good saves the 2nd goal didn't come. Excellent moves involving Holmes cutting inside and crossing for Mckenzie to blast at the keeper, and an overlap and one-two involving Brown and ending with a fierce Melynczuk shot tipped wide. Red Lion continued to defend in numbers, waste time and lump aimless balls up field. One of these balls eventually caught Leodis out just before the break. The ball was allowed to bounce on edge of the area and Red Lion squeezed it on after a scramble. 1-1 at half-time.
The beginning of the 2nd half was even worse for Leodis as Red Lion scored with only there 2nd 'real' attack other than long clearances. A move down the left hand side, a pull back and a tap in finish for a 1-2 lead for Red Lion.
The game then took a bizarre turn as the referee K.George got a little too close to the action as two opposing players jumped to head the ball, and received an elbow or hand in the face, resulting in a bad cut and a potential broken nose. Another delay of over 10 mins before the ref had to retire and the Red Lion manager took charge of the remaining 30mins of the game.
Leodis player were increasingly becoming frustrated at their failure to be leading a game they were dominating and the constant interruption, time wasting and hold-ups. Leodis equalised with around 20mins to go. Paul Scholes won a 50/50 on the edge of the box and slid a ball between the Red Lion centre-backs for Lee Mckenzie to control and fire home.
Leodis then had a blatant penalty disallowed as a goal bound shot was stopped by a Red Lion twice in one scramble. Leodis continued to waste half chances until the winner came in the 90th minute. Good work down the right flank saw Brown release Ryan Holmes who hit a great cross in the box for Jordan Mudd to meet and thunder a header into the top corner.
Leodis finally got the winner they deserved, but had to overcome a hard-working team as well as their own frustrations. Chris Naylor, still adapting to playing at left-back had an excellent match throughout
